WPC: Transient

“Lasting only for a short time; impermanent.”

WPC Transient

I took this photo in Shark Ray Alley off the coast of Caye Caulker, Belize. It’s about a mile west of the Belize Barrier Reef, which is the second biggest barrier reef in the world behind Australia’s.

What you don’t see in this photo is that behind me, there were tens of sting rays, sharks, and other fish swimming around collecting food being dropped from the boat. But these two nurse sharks swam right below me, away from all the chaos, and out to deeper water. In that moment, I forgot everything else happening around me and I was alone in the ocean with these two beautiful creatures. I knew it wouldn’t last long, so I swam behind them for a bit and snapped this photo before one of the guides called for me to come back to the boat. I felt like I could follow them all day, anywhere they went. I wanted to see what life was like through their eyes; I wanted to see what their world looked like. But this moment was fleeting, and I’ll forever wonder what lingered in the dark blue water they were swimming toward.
